What is the mental age test and what does the number mean?
It is a 12-question quiz that compares your everyday habits with the stereotypes of five ages. Pillow forts and cartoon songs pull you towards 10, parties until 3am and viral music towards 16, avocado toast and a favourite playlist from five years ago towards 25, tomato plants and reading glasses towards 40, and falling asleep on the couch before the news towards 70.
The result is a joke with a kernel of truth: it describes the pace you live at, not your intelligence or maturity. A 70 can run a company and a 10 can have a PhD. It is for anyone from about 12 upwards who wants a laugh and a label.

How does the mental age test work?
Each question has answers that each point at one age. You pick the one that is closest to your real life, the quiz counts which age you landed on most, and that is your mental age. If two ages tie, the result shows the one with the slight edge and explains that you are somewhere between.
Answer honestly: if you really do go to bed at ten on a Saturday, say so. The fun of the test is a true result that your friends can argue with, not a flattering one.
What questions are in the mental age test?
A few of the 12, so you can already feel your age creeping up:
- What time do you go to bed on a Saturday: after 3am, around midnight, at 10pm, or whenever you fall asleep on the couch?
- Your ideal Friday night: a pillow fort and cartoons, a party until late, dinner with friends, or tea and a blanket?
- An unknown number calls. Do you answer excitedly, ignore it because nobody calls anymore, or look it up first?
- Your favourite snack: sweets in every colour, energy drinks and chips, avocado toast, or biscuits with tea?
- How do you text: lots of emojis and stickers, abbreviations only, normal sentences, or full punctuation?
Is a high mental age good or bad?
Neither. A mental age of 70 means your habits are calm and settled: early nights, plants, proper sentences, a routine. A mental age of 10 means you still find digging for worms and cartoon songs genuinely fun. Both are fine ways to live, and most people secretly like the result they get. If you get a number you hate, take comfort that it is based on 12 questions about snacks and bedtimes, and change your Saturday night if you feel strongly about it.
Why does the mental age test keep going viral?
Because the result is a number, and numbers get compared. The quiz spreads in family chats when a teenager posts a 40 and a parent posts a 16, in office channels where the youngest colleague turns out to be the oldest inside, and at sleepovers where everyone takes it in a row. In the US and UK it is a regular on TikTok and in Reddit threads about being an old soul; in India and the Philippines it travels through WhatsApp cousin groups and class chats, often as a dare. It also gets a bump around birthdays, when people want proof that they are younger than their ID says. Couples take it to confirm who the responsible one is, and the answer is rarely in doubt.
Mental age test FAQ
What is mental age in this test?
Here it simply means the age your daily habits most resemble, based on 12 questions about sleep, snacks, music, texting and free time. It has nothing to do with intelligence, maturity or any psychological measure. The five possible results are 10, 16, 25, 40 and 70.
Is the mental age test accurate?
It is accurate about your habits and nothing else. If you say you fall asleep on the couch before the news and have tomato plants, it will correctly place you around 40 or 70. Whether that is your true mental age is a question for your friends, who will have opinions.
Why did I get a mental age of 70?
Because your answers described a settled routine: early bedtimes, tea, full sentences in texts, a few plants and no interest in parties. That describes a lot of people in their twenties and thirties and is nothing to be embarrassed about. Retake it after a big night out if you want a different number.
Can children take the mental age test?
Yes, from about 12 upwards, as long as they can read the questions. The content is about bedtimes, snacks and music, with nothing inappropriate. Younger kids tend to get 10 or 16, which is correct, and they usually find it very funny that a parent got 16 too.
Is this the same as an IQ test?
No. An IQ test measures reasoning and this one measures lifestyle, and neither of ours gives a clinical score. The mental age test asks what you eat and when you sleep. If you want a reasoning puzzle instead, our IQ quiz offers that, but it is also just for fun.
Can I share my mental age result?
Yes, the result page has a share button and the number looks great as a screenshot. Most people post it in a family or friend group and challenge everyone else to beat it, in whichever direction counts as winning in that chat. It is free and needs no account.
